It’s All The Same Thing, right?!?

Whoa Nelly, I’m going to tackle a big one over the next couple of posts…

Before I do, I want to give a disclaimer… even though those of you who know me personally know this…. I love ALL people. I also will not judge other people. That’s certainly not my place.

That said, I’m going to address some things that will make people feel uncomfortable. Although it quite frankly makes me uneasy to write this, I feel very led to do it. So I’m going for it because I know that someone, somewhere needs to hear this message.

If I were to make the following statement to you, what would you say?”

“Mother Theresa, Alexander Graham Bell, Jesus…The Telephone, it’s all the same thing!”

What would be your reaction?

You’ll probably correct me, right? Maybe you would say…

“Well, Natasha, those four things are very important in our history, but they are NOT one in the same…”

You may even find the common ground and say:

“Well, those four things have meaningfully changed people’s lives.”

But are Alexander Graham Bell and the telephone the same thing?!?

Of course not! Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. I mean, we aren’t going around calling our phones, Alex are we?!?

(Well, maybe someone in the world is, ha ha ha….but we have a firm line of separation between a person and a physical invention, right?)

And Mother Theresa, an incredible human being, right? But she’s not Jesus. She wasn’t born of a virgin, and she’s not God incarnate. A wonderful human example for others, but Mother Theresa isn’t Jesus.

I say all of that, to address today’s topic, which is the statement I have heard from so many people (and honestly, what I believed for a brief period of time…)

“God, Universe, Jesus, Buddha, it’s all the same thing”

In fact, in my book, Unstoppable Influence, one of my opening statements was about how while I refer to God, you can refer to Him as Universe or Purple Unicorn (or something like that).

Would you like to know where that one came from?

It was a remnant from my approval addiction. My desire to “not offend” anyone.

Take a gander at my Amazon Reviews for Unstoppable Influence and you’ll see how well that plan went over! I had my share of haters (albeit a small number in comparison to the positive reviews).

You can’t do life without offending someone.

Someone is happy to tell you how you’re screwing up.

It was my friend, Myron Golden, who made the statement in one of his trainings, about how God and the Universe are NOT the same thing. For the first time ever, I finally understood how important this distinction is, and WHY it’s important that as Believers, we do not fall into this trap of calling God the Universe.

As believers, we are called to share the Good News. We cannot share the Good News if we are confusing others by saying “God” is the “Universe”.

Here’s why… God created the Universe. Genesis 1: 1-25. The Universe is God’s creation. Like the telephone is Alexander Graham Bell’s invention.

You may be thinking… “Well, Natasha, if that’s what someone wants to call it, what difference does it make?”

Fair question. I asked that question myself.

I mean, if Universe or Purple Unicorn is the phrase that allows people to know God, why bother with a correction?

Well, how close of a personal relationship can you have with your telephone? (The physical device with zero power a/k/a/ an “Electronic Brick”- NOT the software/apps on the device). Are you intimately going to your phone in your greatest time of need?

Is that electronic brick able to bring you any level of PEACE? Does the brick show you LOVE? Does the brick bring you JOY?

Probably not (the Lawyer in me has to put probably, because there may existing the world someone(s) who find happiness and joy from an Electronic Brick.. ha ha ha).

As believers, using God and the Universe interchanegably) is to deny the very nature of God the Father. The One who is Love. The Creator who knows even the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7). The One who knew us before we were formed in our Mother’s womb. (Jeremiah 1:5). He knit us in the womb. (Psalm 139:13)

God is all about getting PERSONAL, y’all. PERSONAL. He’s not a THING!!! Not an electronic brick. Not a vast expanse of stars, planets and black holes.

Who can ever expect to have a personal relationship with infinite space????

You can’t. Sorry.

And when Believers don’t share this difference, we are doing others a grave disservice. We are called to be the Image Bearers of God. As such we want others to know that God LOVES them unconditionally. That He wants a RELATIONSHIP with them.

If you continue to condone the “Universe” speak, you are not sharing the true nature of God.

That doesn’t mean you need to be unkind. Or judge people who use the phrase “Universe”.

But at a minimum we should be sharing the Truth about God’s character and nature. Instead of worrying about “offending” someone.

Let others choose what they will, the Lord gave them that free will. God never forces a relationship with him on us- because that is not love.

But at least be brave, bold and speak the Truth. That is what we are called to do.

And for the first time, in writing this article (and part 2) I’m finally saying yes to that Call. I’ve had a nudge to discuss this for over a year, but it took me this long to muster up the courage to do it.

For those who do not yet know God in this way, and who may have found this article…thank you for getting this far. I have more for you…if you’ll keep reading. These words may be the most important that I’ve ever written.

The God that formed the entire Universe, who formed YOU, wants desperately to have a relationship with you. Yea, you.

You may have made decisions in the past that you’re not proud of.

You may have been raised in a Church that made you feel “less than” or “unworthy”. I know how you feel, as a Catholic it took me years and years to finally get to a place where I could even accept that God would want to have a real relationship with someone like me.

Yet, He does. He really does. He’s a daddy with patience as vast as the ocean. Who has love for you and me as infinite as the universe that He created. He wants to know the desires of your heart. He wants you to come to him in your moments of joy and in your darkest hour.

Your Father in Heaven can wrap you in a peace that surpasses all understanding…if you’ll let him. I’ve experienced that peace myself in the midst of a nightmare situation with my child earlier this year.

There may have been Church people who said and did awful things to you. Made you feel unloved. Unwelcome. Church people aren’t God. They are humans…flawed as we all are…

Please don’t deny yourself the opportunity for the relationship of a lifetime with the One who made you in His image– because of “Church people”. Give Him a chance. Come to Him today.

There’s no right or wrong way to talk to Him. Just talk. Yell. Cry. or just open your heart to hear what He has for you. If you aren’t sure where to start, here’s a short prayer for you today:

God,

Today, I want to start the journey to knowing you better.

Reveal yourself to me. I’m open.

Amen

Stay tuned for Part 2… where I continue tackling uncomfortable Truths…

Love this? Think someone needs to read this? Please share it with a friend!

This is amazing. Thank you for putting this truth. In my own walk I have wrestled with the same thoughts. It’s good to know I am not alone in it. We are all called for his plan, you are paving the way for all of us to find our purpose in Him who has called us for such a time as this.
